Cancellous chips are made from harvested cancellous human bone. The outer portion of our bone is called the Cortical layer, this layer is very fibrous, dense, and hard. The inner layer of our bones are the Cancellous layer, this is a spongy layer that is very porous to allow blood flow. Bone banks harvest this layer, and crush the sterilized spongy bone for surgeons to fill bone voids and cages for fusions. Cancellous chips come in several quantities for the needs of the surgery being performed. They also differ in sizes of the chips, the most common sizes are 1-4mm(small) and 4-10mm(large).
